The History of the Circle Temple CME Church
The New Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church was founded in 1920 in the heart of a predominantly African American neighborhood. The church was established by a group of devoted Methodists who were committed to creating a space where African Americans could worship freely and without discrimination. The church’s founding members included Rev. James Johnson, Rev. Henry Brown, and a small group of dedicated laypeople.
Despite facing many challenges, including limited resources and social and economic barriers, the New CME Church quickly grew in popularity. The church’s message of hope and empowerment resonated with the community, and its membership steadily increased over the years. As the congregation grew, the church acquired several new buildings, including a larger sanctuary and additional space for education and outreach.
One of the church’s defining moments came in the 1960s, during the height of the civil rights movement. The New CME Church played a key role in supporting activists and advocating for racial equality. The church hosted rallies, marches, and community events, and its members were actively involved in the fight for justice and equality.
Throughout the years, the New CME Church has remained committed to serving its community and spreading the love of God. The church has established a number of outreach programs, including a food pantry, a clothing bank, and a youth center. It has also partnered with other organizations to provide support and resources to those in need.
Today, the New CME Church continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration to its members and the community at large. Its rich history is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and community, and its legacy continues to inspire future generations. The church’s commitment to social justice and community outreach serves as a reminder that true faith is not just about personal salvation, but also about serving others and making a positive impact in the world.
